Bangladesh police have introduced a new policy to select officers-in-charge (OCs) of police stations, setting strict eligibility rules in a bid to ensure transparency and curb political interference.
The guidelines, approved by Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, require inspectors to have at least three years’ experience, complete a management course, and maintain strong service records with consistently high Annual Confidential Report scores.
Officers over 54 or those disciplined for misconduct will be barred, while higher education will be favored. An OC may serve a maximum of six years. Officials said the move, ahead of the national election, aims to elevate professionalism in a post long tainted by lobbying and corruption.
Observers praised the merit-based system as a positive step toward restoring trust in policing.
