Frequent abductions of Bangladeshi fishermen by Myanmar’s Arakan Army have turned parts of the Bay of Bengal, especially near Teknaf and St Martin’s Island, into dangerous waters. Since early August, nearly 88 fishermen have been taken away, including 40 seized from five trawlers in a single afternoon.
Families remain anxious as they wait for news of their loved ones, while local associations say the captors routinely loot fish, fuel, and supplies from the boats.
Authorities acknowledge the seriousness of the situation, but responses have so far been limited to protests and appeals. The Border Guard Bangladesh has insisted that many of the incidents stem from fishermen crossing into Myanmar’s waters, yet local leaders argue that the abductions are happening within Bangladeshi territory.
Bangladesh has seen more than 200 abducted fishermen return over the last eight months, but the recurring nature of these kidnappings shows that stronger action is needed. The Navy must step up patrols, protect trawlers, and coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure that the Bay of Bengal is safe for its fishing communities.
