Former chief justice Sushila Karki has emerged as the leading candidate to head Nepal’s interim government following violent protests that forced out the prime minister.
Army chief Gen. Ashok Raj Sigdel met with representatives of the “Gen Z” protest movement this week as the military seeks to restore order after the worst unrest in two decades.
Demonstrations began Monday over a social media ban and corruption but quickly spread nationwide, leaving at least 19 people dead and the parliament building in flames.
Protest representative Rakshya Bam said Karki’s name was put forward in discussions with the army. Karki said that experts must come together to chart the path forward, stressing the parliament still exists. Yet divisions remain, with protesters debating leadership on Discord and other platforms.
