A banned Chhatra League activist was brutally attacked in Sylhet City on Tuesday night, with assailants reportedly severing the tendons of his hands and feet in a calculated attempt to permanently disable him. Police said the incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the Lakkatura tea garden area.
The victim, 24-year-old Rahat Hossain, son of Faruk Hossain of Bonkalapara, was rushed to Osmani Medical College Hospital where he remains under treatment. Sylhet Airport Police Station officer-in-charge Syed Anisur Rahman confirmed that a group of unidentified men struck Rahat with sharp weapons, though the victim could not identify them.
Family members indicated they would disclose more information later, while police await a formal complaint.
The attack, marked by its savagery, highlights the persistent culture of political vengeance in Bangladesh, where opponents are often not just targeted but deliberately crippled, reinforcing the climate of fear surrounding student and factional politics.
