German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has urged his country to explore new trade partners beyond the United States, and Bangladesh should be at the top of that list.
Bangladesh, with more than 170 million people, is one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia, consistently posting growth above 6% in the past decade. Already a key textile and garment supplier to Europe, the country offers Germany a young workforce, competitive manufacturing costs, and a growing consumer market.
Stronger economic ties could help Germany diversify supply chains, reduce dependence on China, and expand export opportunities for machinery, automobiles, and pharmaceuticals.
Bangladesh also provides a platform for collaboration in green technology and climate resilience, issues where Germany has world-leading expertise.
By cultivating closer ties with Dhaka, Berlin can open doors to South and Southeast Asia while strengthening its role in global trade.
