India confirmed Tuesday it is negotiating a bilateral trade pact with the United States after President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs.
Washington recently levied a 50% surcharge on Indian goods, including a 25% penalty for New Delhi’s refusal to stop buying Russian oil. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said talks were underway but described the measures as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.”
Trump, calling the relationship a “totally one-sided disaster,” argued India sells the U.S. “massive amounts of goods” while buying very little. He noted India offered to cut tariffs to zero, but claimed it came “too late.”
