Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s relationship with President Donald Trump has sharply deteriorated after a tense phone call in June.
During the call, Trump repeated claims that he had “solved” the long-running India-Pakistan conflict and hinted that Modi should nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize, noting Pakistan had already pledged to do so, according to a new report in the New York Times.
Modi firmly rejected the idea, insisting that the cease-fire was settled directly between New Delhi and Islamabad without U.S. involvement.
The fallout was immediate: Trump imposed steep tariffs on Indian imports, canceled a planned visit, and continued to publicly take credit for peace India denies. Modi, meanwhile, has shifted toward China and Russia for new partnerships.
