Pakistan is enduring another devastating monsoon season, with 849 people killed and 1,130 injured in rain-related incidents since June 26 — a shocking toll in just over two months.
The flooding has battered Punjab, Sindh, and the country’s mountainous north, exposing Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate extremes.
According to World Weather Attribution (WWA) scientists, climate change has made rainfall 10% to 15% heavier this season, intensifying downpours. In July alone, Pakistan recorded 36% more rain compared to last year.
Experts warn that the country’s rapid urbanization and fragile housing leave millions at risk.
“Half of Pakistan’s urban population lives in fragile settlements where floods collapse homes and cost lives,” said Maja Vahlberg of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre.
