A recent clash between students of Dhaka College and City College has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger action against violent political behavior on campuses across Bangladesh.
At least five students were injured Thursday morning when a confrontation escalated in the Science Lab area of Dhaka, disrupting traffic and raising concerns about safety and discipline in the academic environment. The altercation, which reportedly stemmed from a dispute over coaching center ID cards earlier in the week, quickly turned into a violent clash between two student groups.
Police brought the situation under control, but tension continued to grip the area, according to AKM Mahfuzul Haque, officer-in-charge of New Market Police Station. Additional personnel from both New Market and Dhanmondi police stations were deployed to prevent further violence. The injured students were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
This incident is not isolated. Repeated episodes of politically charged violence involving students continue to disrupt educational institutions across the country, undermining the primary mission of colleges: to provide a safe and conducive environment for learning. It is imperative that academic institutions take a unified and firm stance to prevent such behavior.
Colleges must establish clear disciplinary measures for students who engage in violence. Those found responsible for disrupting campus order through political or personal confrontations should face immediate suspension and expulsion. Moreover, institutions should collaborate to maintain a centralized database of students involved in such activities, ensuring that individuals expelled for violence are not simply transferred to another institution without consequence.
Creating and enforcing such policies will send a clear message that violent behavior has no place in academic settings. A coordinated effort among all colleges in Bangladesh is essential to restore order, protect students, and maintain the integrity of higher education.
