A political row has erupted between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over a Delhi Police letter referring to documents written in “Bangladeshi.”
The Trinamool Congress accused the BJP of targeting Bengalis and promoting xenophobia. Banerjee condemned the letter as “anti-national” and “unconstitutional,” claiming it insulted Bengali speakers across India.
BJP’s Amit Malviya responded, stating the term “Bangladeshi language” was used to identify illegal immigrants and linguistic differences, not to insult Bengali. He accused Banerjee of inciting unrest.
Trinamool pushed back, calling the justification “linguistic apartheid” and evidence of hostility toward Bengali identity. The controversy centers on language, ethnicity, and profiling amid a broader political clash.
