A group of eminent citizens has condemned the recent political clash and subsequent violence in Gopalganj, Bangladesh, calling for an independent investigation into the events that led to deaths and arrests. The group, comprised of prominent figures including photographer Shahidul Alam, journalist Tasneem Khalil, and rights activist Nafiul Alam Supta, visited the area on July 22, following the July 16 incident. Their statement, released today, expressed deep concern over the use of excessive force and arbitrary arrests.
The violence erupted following provocative statements on social media from both Awami League supporters and National Citizen Party (NCP) activists. Reports indicate that the clash involved stage vandalism, arson, and cocktail explosions. The army reportedly fired on the crowd in an attempt to quell the unrest. The group raised concerns about the impartiality of the government inquiry committee and the broad scope of cases filed in connection to the violence, including the arrest of children.
The citizens’ group, which also includes artists, writers, Dhaka University teachers, and lawyers, urged authorities to ensure due process for all those detained. They emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in addressing the root causes of the conflict and preventing future incidents. The group reiterated the need for restraint from all parties involved and a commitment to peaceful dialogue to resolve political differences.
