Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Sunday emphasized unity among all communities in Bangladesh, stating that despite differences in beliefs, religions and customs, everyone is part of one family.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus, 84, of Chittagong, made the remarks while speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the ‘Sampriti Bhaban’ at the Dhaka International Buddhist Monastery.
Referring to the Bangla New Year, Pahela Boishakh, which will be celebrated on Monday, Yunus called it a symbol of harmony. “Everyone will celebrate Pahela Boishakh in their own way, according to their own customs,” he said. “The public will participate in this festival.”
He described the Dhaka International Buddhist Monastery as a longstanding representation of communal harmony in the country. Since its inception, he said, the monastery has contributed to matters of national interest, especially in relation to the Buddhist community.
“With respect to Gautam Buddha’s message of non-violence and equality, this Buddhist monastery has carried out public welfare programs while preserving the religious, social and cultural heritage of the Buddhist community in Bangladesh,” he said. “I hope the Sampriti Bhaban will play a glorious role nationally and internationally, embodying the tradition of harmony and humanity of Bangladesh.”
Yunus also highlighted the historical role of Buddhist monasteries as centers of education and public service. “The monasteries were not only places of religious practice, but also of learning and community welfare. They welcomed monks and students from far and wide, who spread Buddha’s message of peace and harmony,” he said.
He spoke of Gautam Buddha’s teachings on harmony and compassion, citing Buddhist scholar Atish Dipankar as a global figure who helped carry those messages to Tibet. “He is still held in high regard in China,” Yunus added.
During the event, the Chief Advisor praised the facilities at the monastery and suggested that its significance should extend beyond religious boundaries. “It should be a part of the history of all the people of the country,” he said, urging for greater accessibility for younger generations.
Calling the construction of Sampriti Bhaban a major accomplishment, he commended the efforts of the army personnel involved in the project. “You will complete the construction work with such an achievement that it will be remembered for ages,” he said.
