President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticized India’s high tariffs on U.S. auto imports, labeling them as “very unfair,” and announced plans to implement reciprocal tariffs starting April 2.
In his address to Congress, Trump highlighted trade imbalances, stating that India imposes auto tariffs exceeding 100%, while other nations like China and South Korea also maintain higher tariffs on U.S. products compared to what the U.S. charges them.
“On average, the European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada charge us tremendously higher tariffs than we charge them. It’s very unfair,” Trump said.
The president outlined that, beginning April 2, the U.S. will impose reciprocal tariffs, matching the tariffs that other countries apply to American products.
Trump expressed confidence that these measures would generate significant revenue and job growth within the United States.
The announcement marks a significant shift in U.S. trade policy, aiming to address longstanding concerns over trade imbalances and protect domestic industries.
