Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regained control of Delhi’s capital district for the first time in 27 years, winning 48 of 70 seats. The victory is a boost for Modi after a disappointing national election last year. The opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, secured 22 seats, according to India’s Election Commission.
Modi vowed to improve Delhi’s development and quality of life. AAP, which emerged from an anti-corruption movement in 2012, had governed Delhi since 2015. Kejriwal, 55, was arrested on corruption charges before last year’s general election, which he claims was politically motivated. He was released on bail and resigned as chief minister to campaign but lost his contested seat.
AAP had gained popularity through welfare programs such as free water and electricity for the poor. To counter this, the BJP promised financial benefits, including cash payments for women, the elderly, and students.
Despite losing Delhi, Kejriwal pledged that AAP would serve as a constructive opposition. Modi, who returned for a third term as prime minister with the support of regional parties, has won three of four recent state elections, strengthening his party’s position in parliament.
