Time for Bangladesh to claim a permanent UN Security Council seat

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) must evolve to reflect today’s global realities. For decades, it has been dominated by a small group of nations whose influence no longer aligns with the world’s shifting demographics and challenges. Bangladesh, with its growing economic clout and leadership in critical areas like climate action and humanitarian efforts, must now assert its claim for a permanent UNSC seat. Home to over 175 million people, Bangladesh surpasses the populations of current UNSC members like France and the United Kingdom. Yet, this eighth-most populous nation has no say in one of the world’s most critical decision-making bodies. The underrepresentation undermines the UN’s commitment to inclusivity and global equity. A permanent seat for Bangladesh would rightfully amplify the voice of a country representing a significant share of humanity. Few nations understand the urgency of addressing climate change as intimately as Bangladesh. Facing rising seas, extreme floods, and other climate-induced disasters, the country has pioneered adaptation measures and pushed for climate justice on the global stage. Its inclusion in the UNSC would bring critical insights and advocacy to one of humanity’s most pressing security threats. Bangladesh’s leadership during the Rohingya refugee crisis demonstrates its unwavering commitment to humanitarian values. Despite its own resource challenges, the nation has sheltered over a million refugees fleeing persecution in Myanmar. This record positions Bangladesh as a global advocate for displaced populations and an essential voice on peace and security issues. Situated between South and Southeast Asia, Bangladesh plays a stabilizing role in a geopolitically vital region. Its efforts to strengthen regional connectivity and cooperation underscore its capacity to mediate and represent broader regional interests. A permanent UNSC seat would enhance its ability to promote peace and stability in these critical areas. Bangladesh’s steadfast support for international law and multilateral diplomacy reinforces its suitability for a UNSC seat. As a Muslim-majority nation, it would also provide much-needed representation for a demographic largely absent from the council, amplifying voices that are currently marginalized in global governance.
