Chinese company Alu Hi-Tech Industries is investing $100 million in a beverage can factory at Kaliakoir Hi-Tech Park in Gazipur, Bangladesh, with a gas connection still unresolved, The Business Standard reported Oct. 24.
Yuan Dingyan, managing director, said the company aims to complete remaining infrastructure and begin production within eight months. Basement construction has been completed on the roughly 13-acre site, but production has not started.
The company expects annual capacity of 1 billion cans, with 90% intended for export and the remainder for Bangladesh buyers. Machinery and raw materials would come from China.
Yuan identified gas supply as a major challenge. Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority managing director Md Fazlur Rahman said officials had collected the company’s requirements and were working with relevant ministries. A connection had not been confirmed.
