Bangladesh road crashes killed 125,405 people since 2014, group reports

Road crashes killed at least 125,405 people and injured 176,249 in Bangladesh between January 2014 and June 2026, according to the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.

The group compiled its figures from media reports and released them Oct. 21, The Business Standard reported. Its tally covered 72,736 crashes, rather than a single year of road deaths.

A separate media-based assessment by the Road Safety Foundation counted at least 7,963 children killed between January 2020 and September 2026. The two reports cover different periods and should not be added together.

The passenger association identified speeding, unsafe overtaking, overloaded vehicles, driver fatigue, and weak enforcement among major risks.

It urged stronger driver training, vehicle fitness checks, safer pedestrian crossings, and regulated working hours. Those recommendations accompanied calls for better public bus services and road safety inspections.
