Bangladesh Sajek reopens as groups suspend blockade for Durga Puja

Authorities have reopened Sajek Valley in Bangladesh to tourists after lifting a travel restriction, while local groups announced a six-day suspension of their road blockade for Durga Puja.

The blockade will be suspended Oct. 16-21, according to a joint statement issued Thursday by the Committee for the Protection of Public Rights and the Sajek Karbari Association, The Financial Express reported.

The Rangamati district administration had closed the tourist destination Sunday evening, citing unavoidable circumstances. Its withdrawal of that restriction marks a change from the earlier closure.

Babudhan Chakma, convener of the committee, and Notun Joy Chakma, president of the association, announced the suspension following a request from the Sajek Machalong Bazar Durga Puja Celebration Committee. The groups said they wanted the Hindu festival observed with dignity and respect.
