Former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmaker Salahuddin Ahmed died at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, his family confirmed to The Daily Star. He was 80.
His son Tanvir Ahmed, member secretary of Dhaka South City BNP, said Ahmed died around 8:10 p.m. while undergoing treatment. He had suffered from lung problems and other complications for a long time.
Ahmed won Dhaka-4 in national elections held in 1991, February 1996, and 2001. He contested Dhaka-5 in 2008 but lost to Awami League candidate Habibur Rahman Mollah.
BNP nominated him for Dhaka-4 again in 2018. His motorcade came under attack during that campaign.
Ahmed served as BNP’s secretary for commerce affairs and was prominent in Shyampur-Kadamtali. Prime minister Tarique Rahman expressed sorrow and praised his contributions to party organization.
