Bangladesh sets five-phase union council elections starting Jan. 21

Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) has approved a five-phase timetable for elections to about 4,500 union councils, with voting beginning Jan. 21, 2027.

The decision was made Monday at a commission meeting chaired by chief election commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, The Financial Express reported, citing bdnews24.com.

Election commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah announced the plan at a noon briefing after the meeting. The first phase will cover 815 union councils across 80 subdistricts.

The second phase is scheduled for Feb. 4. Voting in the remaining three phases is planned for April 29, May 13, and May 27, 2027.

The dates establish a phased schedule for local government voting across Bangladesh. Monday’s announcement set future polling dates; voting has yet to begin under the newly approved timetable.
