Bangladesh political violence killed 17 in three months, rights group says

At least 17 people were killed and 1,227 injured in 183 incidents of political violence across Bangladesh from July through September, the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) said in a report released Monday.

The group recorded 69 internal clashes within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which it said killed nine people and injured at least 540. Internal BNP conflicts and clashes involving the party accounted for 161 incidents.

The report separately attributed at least 54 deaths and 145 injuries to 137 incidents of mob violence during the same period.

HRSS also recorded 37 deaths in prisons and said 135 journalists faced abuse or harassment in 88 incidents.

The Business Standard reported the findings Oct. 12. The figures are the rights group’s reported counts, covering distinct categories of violence and abuse.
