Bangladesh police arrest three over Gulshan Society extortion allegations

Bangladesh police have arrested three men accused of demanding Tk 50 lakh (approximately $40,600) a month from Gulshan Society, which manages household waste collection in part of Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Akhtar Hossain said Sunday that Anwar, 30, Md Nazmul, 25, and Zidan Mia, 19, were arrested near Ashian Medical College Hospital in Khilkhet around 7 p.m. Saturday.

Police alleged armed men entered Gulshan Society’s office Oct. 6, abused staff, threatened to kill them, and demanded monthly payments. People claiming links to two groups had also threatened waste collection workers and circulated leaflets directing residents’ payments to Ruby Enterprise, police said.

Investigators identified suspects using surveillance footage and other technology, Hossain said. A case was filed at Gulshan Police Station. Gulshan Society operates under a Dhaka North City Corporation work order.
