Most flood-hit farmers in two Bangladesh districts miss aid

Most farmers affected by July floods in Bangladesh’s Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar districts have received no government assistance, according to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) figures reported by The Daily Star.

Flooding affected 150,380 farmers across both districts. Just 44,467, or 29.55%, received assistance, consisting of 5 kilograms of rice seeds each.

In Banshkhali, about 26,000 farmers suffered losses, but only 6,800 received support. Local agriculture officer Shyamal Chandra Sarker said available assistance went to farmers identified as most severely affected.

Floods during July’s first 15 days damaged rice fields, seedbeds, vegetable plantations, and other crops. Some farmers had to purchase additional seeds or borrow money to resume cultivation.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah, DAE additional director for Chattogram, said officials distributed available allocations and would prioritize affected areas for further assistance under regular support programs.
