Bangladesh hospital lacks doctors as inpatient care remains shut

A ten-bed government hospital in Bangladesh’s Gopalganj district has gone without an appointed doctor for about three decades, leaving residents without inpatient or specialist care, The Financial Express reported.

The facility in Gopinathpur Union provides outpatient services with three nurses and one support worker, despite having 20 authorized staff positions.

Inpatient services stopped in 1995 because of shortages of doctors, nurses, and other employees.

Parts of its five-acre grounds are overgrown, and buildings have deteriorated. Residents want the hospital expanded to 50 or 100 beds, equipped, and properly staffed.

Located 15 kilometers from Gopalganj town, the hospital serves an area where impoverished residents have been deprived of inpatient services.

Gopalganj civil surgeon Abu Sayeed Md Faruk said he had notified higher authorities and suggested demolishing and rebuilding its buildings.
