Bangladesh police detain 3 after crude bombs explode following Hasina birthday procession

Two crude bombs exploded Saturday in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi neighborhood after a flash procession marking ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s birthday, police said.

The blasts occurred around 12:15 p.m. in front of Meena Bazar on Road 27, according to Dhanmondi Police Station officer-in-charge Muhammad Imdadul Islam. Police detained three people from the scene.

Police said several people had gathered under the banner of the activities-banned Awami League before the explosions. A video circulating on social media appeared to show participants chanting slogans for Hasina’s birthday before the blasts.

Imdadul said police collected evidence and were investigating who was involved and what motivated the incident.

The explosions caused panic in the area for a short time, according to the report. No injuries were reported.
