Bangladesh launches AI surveillance and automated fines on Dhaka-Chattogram highway

Bangladesh has launched artificial intelligence (AI)-powered traffic surveillance on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway as authorities pursue wider upgrades aimed at reducing accidents and congestion.

Officials plan to install 1,427 AI cameras at 490 points along about 250 kilometers from Jatrabari to Chattogram City Gate. The system detects speeding, lane violations, dangerous overtaking, wrong-way driving, and illegal parking.

Within its first 24 hours, authorities filed 449 cases and imposed Tk15.51 lakh, or Tk1.551 million (approximately $12,600), in fines, with speeding the most common violation. The system sends notices to registered vehicle owners and allows payment through mobile financial services.

A feasibility study is also underway to expand the highway to 10 lanes. Officials are planning additional underpasses, an expanded Paduar Bazar overpass, and eventually an elevated expressway along the 232-kilometer corridor.
