Bangladesh actress says she was assaulted in Italy. Lawmaker demands government action.

A Bangladesh lawmaker on Tuesday demanded government action after actress Azmeri Haque Badhon alleged she was physically and verbally assaulted in Italy by pro-Awami League activists.

Reserved-seat lawmaker Jaharat Adib Chowdhury raised the issue in parliament, saying Badhon was attacked while walking in a park with family members and a young child. She said the assault was linked to Badhon’s role as a “July warrior” and support for the July 2024 movement.

Badhon said in a video message that attackers shoved her, grabbed and threw her phone, and demanded she chant “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.”

“Such an attack on a woman and an artist who stood by the country cannot be accepted in any way,” Jaharat said.

Deputy speaker Kaysar Kamal called the incident unacceptable and said parliament would seek a response from foreign affairs officials.
