Bangladesh forms central cell to restore navigability of Dhaka rivers and canals

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister’s Office has formed a 35-member central cell and three high-level subcommittees to curb pollution and restore navigability in rivers and canals around Dhaka.

The cell, headed by the prime minister’s principal secretary, will oversee work involving the Buriganga, Turag, Dhaleshwari, Balu, and Shitalakshya rivers. Bangladesh Navy will coordinate the effort, according to a notification issued Sept. 1.

The initiative will target industrial and household waste, illegal drains, and pollution entering canals and waterways. Separate subcommittees will focus on controlling pollution at its source, clearing canals and drains, restoring water flow, removing waste from riverbeds, and preparing long-term restoration plans.

The central cell will coordinate ministries and agencies, review progress, prioritize projects and funding, and submit monthly updates to the prime minister.
