Bangladesh calls cancellation of Awami League-linked Delhi event positive step

Bangladesh on Monday welcomed India’s decision to block an Awami League-linked event in New Delhi, calling it a “positive step” as Dhaka and New Delhi continue discussions over a possible visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

State minister for foreign affairs Humaiun Kobir said Bangladesh would not shelter people accused of terrorism who flee India and expects India to do the same for those fleeing Bangladesh.

“We will not give space in Dhaka to any terrorist fleeing from India. Similarly, we don’t expect any terrorist fleeing from Bangladesh to get space in Delhi or anywhere in India,” Kobir told reporters at foreign ministry.

A planned Aug. 29 Awami League press event at Foreign Correspondents’ Club in New Delhi was canceled after police refused permission.

Kobir said Rahman would visit India “at an appropriate time,” but no date has been fixed.
