Bangladesh probe blames severe safety lapses for 10 deaths at Sitakunda shipbreaking yard

A Bangladesh government probe has recommended disciplinary action against the owner of a Sitakunda shipbreaking yard after finding severe safety lapses and negligence led to the deaths of 10 workers from toxic gas exposure.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) leaked Aug. 14 as workers breached a ballast tank aboard scrap vessel MT Rasi at Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling Industry in Chattogram, according to the investigation report.

Nine workers died at the scene, and another died during hospital treatment. The dead included an oxygen supply truck helper from outside the facility.

Investigators found workers lacked gas masks or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The operation was conducted on a weekly holiday without a safety manager, ambulance, doctor, or emergency rescue team present.

Industries minister Khondakar Abdul Muktadir said Monday that authorities would take legal action against anyone found negligent.
