United States congressional staff visit Rohingya camps in Bangladesh

A United States congressional staff delegation visited Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday, meeting Bangladeshi officials to discuss humanitarian conditions and prospects for repatriation to Myanmar.

The delegation, accompanied by officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Multi-Country Office in Washington, also visited the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner.

Members met refugee relief and repatriation commissioner Mohammed Mizanur Rahman and discussed the ongoing crisis, camp conditions, humanitarian response, and prospects for safe, voluntary, and sustainable Rohingya return to Myanmar.

The commissioner’s office said the visit reflected continued United States interest in the Rohingya situation and underscored the importance of international cooperation in supporting refugees and the humanitarian response in Bangladesh.

Seven congressional staff members joined the visit, along with UNHCR officials Nancy Jackson and Jessie Ainslie.
