Bangladesh plans four more engineering colleges in technical education push

Bangladesh will establish four more engineering colleges and turn Dhaka Polytechnic Institute into a model institution as part of a push to expand technical education, education minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said on Sunday.

Speaking at a national dialogue on technical education in Dhaka’s Sobhanbagh area, Milon said the government is giving “the highest importance” to technical and vocational education to build a skilled workforce.

“We have to move away from the conventional concept of education alone as technical education plays a highly important role in the socio-economic development of the country,” he said.

Milon said there is strong global demand for workers with technical skills and noted that expatriate workers are a major source of foreign currency earnings for Bangladesh. He said Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is essential to turning the country’s population into skilled human resources.
