Bangladesh seeks Interpol red notice for former army chief Aziz Ahmed

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecutors have sought an Interpol red notice for former army chief Aziz Ahmed over a crimes against humanity case tied to the 2013 crackdown on a Hifazat-e Islam rally in Dhaka.

The chief prosecutor’s office asked the National Central Bureau at Bangladesh Police Headquarters to take necessary steps, chief prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said Tuesday.

Request follows an arrest warrant issued after prosecutors filed formal charges July 27 against 41 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over events at Shapla Chattar.

Tribunal later issued warrants for 31 defendants described as fugitives, including Aziz.

Security forces launched a joint operation on May 5, 2013, to clear Hifazat supporters from Motijheel following violence and vandalism. Aziz was serving as director general of Border Guard Bangladesh at the time.
