Bangladesh plans AI auto-fine system for highways nationwide

Bangladesh plans to gradually introduce an artificial intelligence-based automated traffic fine system on highways nationwide after evaluating a system launched on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, home minister Salahuddin Ahmed said Tuesday.

Salahuddin inaugurated the system at the Highway Police Command, Control and Monitoring Centre in Meghnaghat, Narayanganj.

Artificial intelligence cameras installed on 490 pillars can detect speeding, dangerous overtaking, traffic signal violations, wrong-way driving, and illegal parking.

Violation information will be sent to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority database, and registered owners will receive a short message service notification detailing the offense and fine. Payments can be made through mobile financial services.

Salahuddin said repeated violations could result in stricter administrative or legal action, including vehicle registration cancellation. He also warned that authorities would act against illegal toll collection and unauthorized vehicles on highways.
