Bangladesh marks Mujib assassination anniversary amid tight security and arrests

Bangladesh marked the 51st anniversary of the assassination of founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Saturday amid heightened security, arrests and clashes over attempts to hold commemorative events.

Mujib and most of his family were killed on Aug. 15, 1975, in a military coup. The public holiday once observed on the date was canceled by the interim government in 2024, and the government that took office in February has retained that decision.

Police tightened checkpoints across Dhaka and deployed specialized units, including bomb disposal and K-9 teams, while monitoring key sites with cameras and drones.

Authorities also arrested 53 Awami League leaders and activists at a Bashundhara apartment Thursday night. Police said they were preparing a meeting and flash procession for Aug. 15. Attempts by loyalists to gather at Mujib’s former Dhanmondi residence were blocked by police and counter-protesters.
