Suspected Pakistani spy arrested near Bangladesh border in India

West Bengal’s Special Task Force arrested two men, including a suspected Pakistani national, as investigators examined possible espionage activity near the Bangladesh border, officials said.

Rana Rauf, also known as Wahab Alam, was arrested Tuesday in Habra, near Bongaon. Officials said they suspect he has links to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence and had been monitoring military movements, trains and sensitive locations, including Fort William in Kolkata.

Investigators said Rauf entered India illegally through Nepal in 2012 and possessed several Indian identity documents. Authorities also suspect he planned to cross into Bangladesh through the Petrapole border.

Mohammad Ejaz was arrested in Kolkata and is accused of helping Rauf obtain Indian identification documents. A court ordered both men held in police custody for 14 days as investigators examine possible links to banned terrorist groups and other suspects.
