Bangladesh-Myanmar gas pipeline plan faces hurdle over Arakan Army control

A proposed pipeline carrying natural gas from Myanmar to Bangladesh would require cooperation from the Arakan Army because the armed group controls much of the territory along the planned route, analysts said.

Bangladesh has expressed interest in buying gas from Myanmar’s offshore Shwe project as it seeks additional supplies to meet growing domestic energy demand. The gas would be transported by pipeline to Chittagong.

“The AA controls approximately 90 percent of Arakan State, including the entire border area with Bangladesh,” Arakan political analyst U Myo Kyaw said. “Transporting gas through Arakan territory requires the AA’s consent.”

Analysts said Myanmar’s military may lack sufficient territorial control to guarantee pipeline security, while fighting continues near Sittwe and Kyaukphyu.

The project could also provide economic benefits to communities in Rakhine State and potentially strengthen the Arakan Army’s regional political position.
