Bangladesh home minister pledges full implementation of July Charter

Home minister Salahuddin Ahmed said Wednesday that the government would fully implement the July National Charter through constitutional amendments and institutional reforms.

“Every letter and spirit of the July National Charter will be realized,” Ahmed said at a reception for families of those killed and injured during the July uprising at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Dhaka.

He said political parties must work together to fulfill the uprising’s goals and warned against allowing any party or individual to claim sole credit for it.

Ahmed also said the government was preparing legislation to prevent enforced disappearances and provide justice for victims. He expressed hope that the bill would be introduced in parliament.

On the Awami League, Ahmed said political parties, like individuals, could face trial for crimes against humanity, but added that courts, not the executive branch, should determine a party’s future.
