Families of Bangladesh uprising victims struggle as justice remains delayed

Families of people killed during Bangladesh’s 2024 uprising say they are struggling financially and remain frustrated by delays in prosecuting those accused of the deaths.

Mirajul Islam, 21, was shot and killed in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area on Aug. 5, 2024. His father died shortly afterward, leaving his mother and younger brother in severe financial hardship. His brother, Mezbaul Miah, left school to work and support the family.

“Now that July is no more, we also have no importance,” Miah said, describing how public attention faded after the uprising.

A government representative said authorities remained in contact with the family and had provided substantial financial assistance.

In Sherpur, families of Sourav, Sobuj and Mahbub are still awaiting justice.

Police said chargesheets were filed in three murder cases, but proceedings involving a magistrate require approval from the Ministry of Public Administration.
