Campus clashes between rival student groups spread across Bangladesh

Clashes between rival student organizations spread across several Bangladesh campuses this week, leaving multiple people injured and prompting restrictions aimed at preventing further violence.

Members of Jatiyatabadi Chatradal and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed Tuesday at Jagannath University, Dhaka College and Dhaka Aliah Madrasah. At Jagannath University, a confrontation during a student sit-in escalated into brick throwing near National Medical College Hospital.

A separate clash Monday at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur began over banners displayed during a July Uprising Day exhibition. Reports placed the number of injured at between five and seven.

University officials imposed Section 144 near the campus entrance after both groups announced rallies for Tuesday. Leaders from the organizations later held discussions and described the Begum Rokeya University confrontation as a misunderstanding.
