Bangladesh to inaugurate July Memorial Museum on uprising anniversary

Bangladesh will inaugurate the July Memorial Museum on Wednesday, Aug. 5, to mark July Mass Uprising Day, state minister for cultural affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyum said Tuesday.

Khaiyum said the museum was established to preserve the history of the prolonged movement against authoritarian rule and the July Mass Uprising for future generations.

He said authorities plan to gradually develop the museum into a comprehensive memorial and research center with facilities and research resources.

The government decided to establish the museum on Dec. 24, 2024, and the project formally began in January 2025 after the land was transferred to the relevant authorities.

Khaiyum said the opening was delayed while officials drafted laws and regulations, amended the relevant ordinance, published a gazette notification and created a legal framework to manage the institution. Officials selected Aug. 5 after completing those procedures.
