Bangladesh acting speaker calls for research on haor hardship and climate migration

Acting speaker Kayser Kamal on Tuesday called for extensive research to ease hardships in Bangladesh’s haor regions and address rising climate-driven migration.

Kamal made the remarks during a meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad with a delegation led by Tasneem Siddiqui, founding chair of the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit.

“We have come to Parliament to represent the people. Our responsibility towards the country and its citizens is immense,” Kamal said.

He said research findings should be used in policymaking and development programs to improve livelihoods in haor communities.

Participants also discussed creating a parliamentary caucus on climate change and raising the concerns of vulnerable countries such as Bangladesh at United Nations climate forums.

Kamal said climate change and natural disasters are disrupting lives and livelihoods and gradually weakening social and family bonds.
