Nearly 1 million people in Bangladesh seek national ID corrections each year

Nearly 1 million people in Bangladesh seek corrections to their National Identity Cards each year, according to an Election Commission report released Sunday.

The commission said it received 6,378,370 correction applications between 2020 and July 2026, an average of 981,287 a year, or about 2,688 a day. It disposed of 6,230,592 applications, approving 4,935,138 and rejecting 1,295,454. Another 147,778 cases remain pending.

Md Saiful Islam, director of operations at the National Identity Registration Wing, said category Gha cases, involving changes to birth dates, ages and parents’ names, were the most difficult to resolve because supporting documents often contained inconsistencies.

He said repeated online applications after earlier rejections also added to the backlog.

The Election Commission formed a four-member committee July 16 to recommend faster ways to process category Gha applications.
