Bangladesh proposes pipeline gas imports from Myanmar

Bangladesh has proposed importing natural gas from Myanmar through a cross-border pipeline as it seeks to diversify energy supplies and meet rising demand.

Power, energy and mineral resources minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood raised the proposal Sunday during a meeting with Myanmar ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe at the secretariat in Dhaka, according to a ministry press release.

Myanmar’s ambassador responded positively and discussed the possibility of supplying liquefied natural gas to Bangladesh. Both sides also showed interest in reviving earlier talks on a pipeline linking Myanmar with Bangladesh’s Chattogram region.

Mahmood proposed a ministerial-level meeting and said Bangladesh would invite Myanmar’s energy minister to Dhaka. He also expressed willingness to visit Myanmar.

Officials discussed how a pipeline could support the proposed China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor, regional connectivity, long-term trade and broader energy cooperation.
