Bangladesh wants ex-police chief Benazir Ahmed returned. Reports say Dubai court granted him bail.

Bangladesh has begun the process of bringing former police chief Benazir Ahmed back from the United Arab Emirates amid reports that a Dubai court released him on conditional bail, a government adviser said Sunday.

Foreign affairs adviser Humaiun Kobir said the home ministry had initiated the necessary procedures and was discussing the case. He said officials would provide an update when progress was made.

“If there is progress, you will be informed by the home ministry or our foreign ministry,” Kobir told reporters.

Bangladeshi media reported that Benazir was released Thursday after a court approved bail July 27. His passport reportedly remains in court custody, and he cannot leave the United Arab Emirates without permission. Dubai authorities have not officially confirmed the release.

“We hired a law firm a few days ago. Regarding this matter, they have been specifically instructed to pursue the cancellation of the bail,” said Salahuddin Ahmed, Home Minister of Bangladesh.

Benazir was arrested in connection with Anti-Corruption Commission cases alleging illegal wealth and money laundering. The International Criminal Police Organization issued a red notice against him in April 2025.
