Six months of failure define Tarique Rahman’s leadership, NCP leader says

National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Nasiruddin Patwary said Tarique Rahman had failed to demonstrate that he could lead Bangladesh and should not be given control of the country.

“Over the past six months, Tarique Rahman has proved that he failed the test of running the country,” Patwary said. “Since he failed, he should not be given a second chance.”

Patwari accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader of prioritizing power over his promises and warned that the country’s sovereignty could be endangered if an unqualified leader took charge.

Rahman had remained in London after being barred from returning to Bangladesh under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted during the July Revolution.

Deshweek had argued in opinion pieces that Rahman, the corruption-tainted heir to the Zia political dynasty, should not be allowed to return and seek power through the ballot box.

“If Tarique Rahman cannot ensure justice for our 1,400 martyred brothers, the youth of Bangladesh are united and ready to take power,” Patwary said, referring to those killed during the uprising that ousted Hasina.

NCP leaders say Rahman has largely abandoned efforts to reform a system of government that descended into tyranny under Hasina.
