BNP considers four senior leaders for Bangladesh president

Four senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders have emerged as leading contenders to become Bangladesh’s next president following Mohammed Shahabuddin’s resignation.

Party sources identified Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan and Abdul Moyeen Khan as the main figures under consideration.

The party is weighing loyalty, competence, judgment, broad acceptability and the ability to take firm positions during national crises.

Selecting Fakhrul or Nazrul could also affect the party’s leadership structure because both remain influential policymakers and would have to leave active party politics if elected president.

Acting president Hafiz Uddin Ahmad and former interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus have also been mentioned in political discussions, though neither has been officially identified as a candidate.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who chairs the party, is expected to make the final decision. Parliament must elect Bangladesh’s 23rd president by Oct. 22.
