Bangladesh weighs prime minister’s India visit. Delhi says it is eagerly waiting.

Bangladesh and India have agreed to reset bilateral relations based on sovereign equality and mutual interests, officials said after the newly appointed Indian high commissioner held his first courtesy meetings in Dhaka.

Dinesh Trivedi met foreign minister Khalilur Rahman and state minister Shama Obaid as both sides discussed closer cooperation and ongoing work on water-sharing agreements.

Trivedi said India was “eagerly waiting” for a visit by Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who has been invited to attend the BRICS summit in Delhi on Sept. 12.

The foreign minister said the foreign ministry was reviewing the invitation. “Regarding resetting the relations of the two countries, we agree that we will move forward on the basis of sovereign equality,” he said.

The officials did not discuss Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, border killings or alleged push-ins, but Rahman said existing “irritations” must eventually be addressed.
