Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina will face legal action if she returns to Bangladesh, law minister Md Asaduzzaman said Thursday, adding that authorities would act within the powers granted by law.
Asaduzzaman made the comments after reporters asked about a recent interview in which Hasina said she planned to return to Bangladesh in December. He said the home ministry was working to secure her extradition.
“If she comes, the law will take its own course. We will not do anything in violation of the law. We will exercise the authority that the law gives us,” Asaduzzaman said.
Asked how Hasina could return without a passport, he said that was her responsibility.
“When she enters our jurisdiction, I will exercise the authority given to me by law and enforce the law. That’s as simple as it is,” he said.
