New York City honors Bangladesh-born detective killed in Midtown attack

New York City officials, police officers and relatives gathered Tuesday to honor Bangladesh-born Detective Didarul Islam one year after he was killed in a Midtown Manhattan mass shooting.

Islam, 36, was working a private security detail at 345 Park Avenue on July 28, 2025, when a gunman carrying a rifle entered the building. Islam and three civilians were killed before the gunman took his own life.

“When I think about Didar, I think about a man who greeted people with a smile,” deputy inspector Muhammad Ashraf, commander of the 47th Precinct, said at the memorial.

Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh and father of three, had served with the New York Police Department for nearly four years. He was posthumously promoted to detective first grade.

His wife was pregnant when he died and later gave birth to their youngest son.

A Bronx street near the family’s home was recently renamed for Islam.

“Detective Islam died as he lived: a hero. In the midst of a horrific mass shooting in Midtown exactly one year ago he gave his life in the line of duty,” said mayor Zohran Mamdani. “It was an incredible act of courage we must never forget.”
